Stock up on popcorn and soda because this January, the cinema is bringing the thrills like a rollercoaster ride!

Captain America: Brave New World

the first major blockbuster of the year will not be released in Cinemas until February. Late 2024 holdovers like Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King will dominate January. The animated adaptation of the popular children’s graphic novel, Dog Man, and Universal’s Wolf Man, directed by Leigh Whannell, are the most significant films this month and are expected to take the lead.

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera | Lionsgate

Den of Thieves 2 is coming out on January 10, 2025. It is a sequel to Den of Thieves, which was released in mid-January 2018 and earned a sum of $15.2M in the opening. Domestically, it earned around $44.9M globally, it made $80.5M.

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera revolves around a group of LAPD officers who travel to Europe trying to stop the diamond heist. The original film has gained a lot of loyal fans following through streaming platforms which will benefit the sequel as there aren’t many big movies lined up for release. A possible comparison can be made with Plane (2023) an action film starring Gerard Butler, which too was released in a quiet period and worked well having a gross total of $32.1M.

Wolf Man | Universal Pictures / Blumhouse

Wolf Man is a second remake of a classic Universal horror property which will be released on January 17, 2025, in cinemas. It is directed by Leigh Whannell who earlier in 2020 directed The Invisible Man. Originally the movie Wolf Man was scheduled to be released in October 2024 but with the release in the new year the movie will face a little competition from other horror movies only as most of them were released on Halloween.

The success of The Invisible Man resulted in thepartnership of Universal’s profitable with Blumhouse Productions. It made $28.2M in February 2020 and later the profit went up to a total of $70.4M. Just three weeks into its release the industry-wide shutdown due to the pandemic affected the film’s total earnings. The Black Phone was directed by Whannell and it was released in June 2021 by Blumhouse Productions. It earned $90.1M domestically and worldwide its earning was $161.4M.

The new film revolves around Blake (Christopher Abbott) who inherits his childhood home in rural Oregon. He talks his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) into taking a break from the busy city life and visiting the property along with their daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth).

Flight Risk | Lionsgate

Flight Risk was originally set to be released in October last year but was moved to late January 24, 2025; this move might help it gain more viewers. This movie revolves around a pilot (Mark Wahlberg) transporting an Air Marshal (Michelle Dockery) along with a fugitive (Topher Grace) who will be testifying in a major criminal case. Since Hacksaw Ridge in 2016 ($15.1M opening, $67.2M total domestic earnings) as a director, it’s Mel Gibson’s first film.

Flight Risk would not have any serious competition as it is getting in cinemas after the two weeks of Den of Thieves: Pantera (also from Lionsgate) and Love Hurts which is another big action movie is not going to be released until February 7th and Captain America: Brave New World on Valentine’s Day.

Companion | Warner Bros.

Companion will be released January 31st, 2025. Drew Hancock, writer-director of the films says though this movie is being sold “as a horror-ish movie,” but “it’s six different genres”. The upcoming movie is an emotional rollercoaster for the viewers. The movie is set in a dystopian future and explores their toxic relationship, starring Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher. The cast also includes rising stars Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén, and Rupert Friend.

Dog Man | Universal Pictures / DreamWorks Animation
